Antisemitism in Online Gaming Spaces

Deep Dive with Constantin Winkler

From swastikas in gaming forums to anti-Semitic harassment in voice chats and reenactments of extremist attacks in modified game environments, far-right ideologies have become increasingly visible in some parts of digital gaming culture. How exactly does antisemitism manifest in these spaces, and why are gaming communities particularly susceptible to such narratives?

This session will explore the different manifestations of antisemitism in gaming culture. Topics will include problematic representations in game development, extremist actors appropriating existing games, toxic community dynamics, and coded cultural references. Additionally, it will explore the gamification of political radicalization.

Constantin Winkler, a Researcher in the RadiGaMe project at PRIF and a doctoral candidate at the University of Passau, will lead the session. His research focuses on antisemitism and radicalization in digital gaming environments. His areas of focus include antisemitism studies, cultural sociology, and Critical Theory.
