This year marks the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These devastating attacks, as well as decades of testing and production of nuclear weapons, have caused severe and lasting human suffering and ecological damage. The nuclear past continues to have consequences for the people affected up to the present day.
As part of a series of events with survivors of nuclear weapons tests, organized by IPPNW Germany, the nuclear survivors Aigerim Seitenova and Aigerim Yelgeldy from Qazaqstan as well as Hinamoeura Morgant-Cross from Mā’ohi Nui visit Germany to give personal testimonies about the impact on their health, their country and their communities.
Aigerim Seitenova will show her documentary film JARA – Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan which explores the survival stories of six women who deal with the tragic legacy of 40 years of nuclear testing on Qazaq land.
A panel of survivors and researchers will then discuss challenges of nuclear justice. It will explore how we can and should deal with nuclear wrongdoing in the past. This includes questions of criminal liability, reparations for victims and environmental remediation, truth-seeking and necessary legal reforms. The event aims to shed light on what has been achieved so far in these different areas, identify gaps, and suggest what should be done to fill them.
The event is organized in cooperation between IPPNW Germany and PRIF. Participation is free of charge.
