Everyday Political Subjectification and the Rise of Regressive Politics. Downward Mobility, Urbanization and the Production of Space in Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig
The crises of the last 15 years have increased social polarization. At the same time, the far right has gained ground in society and right-wing violence has risen sharply. The DFG project analyzes the social fault lines through a multi-sited ethnography, especially in the urban peripheries of Frankfurt/Main and Leipzig.

Attacks on Life – The Targeting of Infrastructure in Armed Conflicts
The targeting of infrastructure in armed conflicts has not received much attention from conflict scholars, who have focused more on direct violence against civilians. However, selective targeting of infrastructure leads to immense suffering, resulting in health and humanitarian crises during and after the attacks. This project aims to comprehensively investigate this phenomenon using various data and social science methods.

As a result of its investments in overseas infrastructure, China has become significantly exposed to conflict risks. This project studies how China is adapting to these risks, taking a disaggregated view of several distinct groups of actors. It examines how these actors perceive overseas conflict risks, and how Chinese policies and overseas agency are changing in response.

The Impact of the Collective Reincorporation of Former FARC-EP Fighters on the Local Reconstruction of the Social Fabric in Colombia
Can the social fabric, torn apart by years of armed conflict, be mended? Can interactions between former combatants and host communities reduce social distance and mistrust among them? This project delves into these questions by analyzing the collective reintegration of ex-FARC-EP members and its impact on local social reconstruction in Colombia, drawing on over 1,200 surveys, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic observations.

New Forms of Warfare: The Transformation of War
Given the high-tech nature of Western armed forces with remote-controlled, semi-autonomous and autonomous systems, this project examines in particular the characteristics of the use of autonomous and robotic technologies as well as the social impact of high-tech warfare on possible post-war orders. In this way, the project contributes both to basic research and increasingly to applied research on the technologization of war.

A New Role for NATO in the High North? The European Arctic and Russia’s War against Ukraine

Elite Management and Ethnic Conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa
This research project investigates how ethnic power relations (EPR)—the inclusion or exclusion of ethnic groups in government— impact ethnic conflict in Africa. It advances a theoretical framework of ethnic elite management and compiles a comprehensive database on the ethnic composition of African governments. This allows to reevaluate and extend theories and findings about the relationship between EPR and violent conflict.

Preparing for Peace: International and Local Responses to the Spread of Violent Extremism
The potential spread of violence from Sahelian states to the broader region, specifically the coastal countries Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin has recently become a key policy concern. Building on a growing literature on antici¬patory (inter¬national) governance, this research project explores different rationales and practices of preventing violent extremism in coastal African countries and the under¬standings of (in)security and peace under¬pinning them. It thereby explores the interactions between (un)certainty and (in)security and the political consequences that evolve from the particular way in which violent extremism is predominantly addressed in the region.

Perspectives of Arms Control
In times of growing geopolitical tensions, questions of arms control, disarmament and nonproliferation regain importance. To support political decision-makers, the German Federal Foreign Office and PRIF have established a joint doctoral program. The doctoral researchers analyze historical, current and future arms control issues and integrate scientific debates with practical implementation. Following a successful pilot phase (2019-2024), the project continues with two doctoral positions (2024-2027/8).

The ConTrust research initiative investigates the origins and formation of trust in social coexistence. With the help of empirical and normative research into trust in conflict contexts, the project aims to draw practical conclusions regarding the possibilities of shaping conflicts in such a way that trust can be formed and stabilized in a productive manner. From this, the researchers want to develop a diagnostic of the dynamics of trust and mistrust in typical conflict constellations and use it to establish an international center for trust and conflict research.

German-Colombian Peace Institute CAPAZ
As part of the Colombian peace process, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the development and work of a German-Colombian Peace Institute (Instituto Colombo-Alemán para la Paz - CAPAZ) in Bogotá. The institute has now become the core of a broad academic network within Colombia and between Colombia and Germany. In particular, universities from regions of Colombia that have been most affected by the conflict are also involved.

RadiGaMe – Processes of Radicalization on Gaming Platforms and Messenger-Services
The PRIF subproject of the RadiGaMe research consortium analyzes extremist activities on gaming and gaming-related platforms, in particular the communication dynamics in these digital spaces. PRIF is also responsible for knowledge transfer within the overall network and organizes exchange formats between academia, civil society, tech platforms and law enforcement agencies, among others. Islamism has a deep impact on various areas of society. Media debates change the image of Muslims as a whole and trigger dynamics of polarisation. As a threat scenario, Islamism justifies far-reaching security policy measures, prevention approaches, and the funding of numerous research projects. To support this field of research and make the insights more visible, the RADIS transfer project provides support for a research network on Islamism by organizing joint events and pooling various knowledge transfer formats.
