On May 28, Nicole Deitelhoff, Christopher Daase, Stefan Kroll, Susanne Boetsch, and Yan-Jie Schnellbach were in Singapore. An international workshop on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Future of Crisis Management and Conflict Analysis in a Fragmented World” took place there. PRIF organized this event for the first time in collaboration with Fraunhofer Singapore and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS). The German Embassy in Singapore also supported the initiative.
The workshop was titled “How Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Systems Are Reshaping Crisis and Conflicts” and brought together German and international representatives from the fields of politics, new technologies, and academia in Singapore. The program covered several policy areas and their potential relationship to AI: AI in security policy and strategies, AI-augmented diplomacy and conflict resolution, AI regulation and arms control, as well as emerging disruptive technologies.
The PRIF project JOSHUA was presented as an example of an AI-based system for conflict scenario planning. In collaboration with the Technical University of Darmstadt, PRIF is developing this innovative project to integrate early warning and scenario planning with AI and make them more accessible.
The workshop focused on evaluating the use of AI tools in security policy and diplomatic contexts. At the same time, it served to strengthen the partnership between German and Singaporean researchers and institutions. This workshop marked a successful start to that effort.
