The new RADIS web talk series “Islamism – changing scenes, structures and prevention?” discusses how extremist ideologies can be countered and constructive alternatives created together with experts from the fields of science, prevention and political education.
The recent attacks have once again brought the issues of Islamism and Islamist terrorism to the center of public attention. The debate has intensified further as a result of the election campaign and current events in Germany. Frequent topics of these public discussions are the origin, age and mental state of the suspects. However, actors and groups that specifically promote radicalization – especially of young people – are also increasingly coming under scrutiny.
There has also been a significant increase in so-called pro-Palestinian demonstrations since the terrorist attack on Israel by Islamist Hamas on October 7, 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza, some of which have also featured Islamist actors and spread anti-Semitic narratives. The war in the Middle East acted as a catalyst: the rapid mobilization of supporters and the targeted instrumentalization of the conflict demonstrate the continued presence of Islamist currents, both on social media and in analogue social spaces.
The new RADIS webtalk series highlights current dynamics and changes in the context of extremist and violent Islamism, looks at current protest events and the role of anti-Semitism in radicalization processes, examines transnational links and the background to radicalization processes. In addition, the contributions discuss the role of the media, deal with agitators and digital developments – including the growing importance of gaming spaces as a structure that promotes radicalization.
