Political scientist A. Dirk Moses, professor at the City College of New York, will be a visiting professor at PRIF in June and July 2025. During his stay, he will also be involved as a Visiting Fellow at the TraCe research center. Over the course of his two-month stay, he will be researching the meaning and impact of the term “genocide”. He is examining its political, social and memory-cultural function, particularly in the context of colonial violence and memory.
At PRIF, Moses aims to deepen the exchange with colleagues on issues of genocide and colonial memory. He describes his academic interest as follows:
“Whether as a claim during mass violence or later in memory and recognition, genocide has become a term with talismanic power and a stigmatizing aura. For this reason, it is referred to as the 'crime of crimes.' As a scholar, I follow a constructivist approach to such norms and hierarchies, aiming to question how and why they arose, whose interests they serve, and what appeal they hold. In Frankfurt, I intend to continue this line of research by working with colleagues on issues of genocide and colonial memory.”
On July 8, 2025, A. Dirk Moses will also take part in the book presentation and panel discussion “The Future of Remembering” at the Literaturhaus Frankfurt. Further information on the event and free registration.
