On November 19, 2024, the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law (WSI) at Kiel University will award the Jost Delbrück Award for the third time. This year's recipient is PRIF researcher Hendrik Simon for his book “A Century of Anarchy? War, Normativity, and the Birth of Modern International Order” (Oxford University Press, 2024). The groundbreaking study takes a critical look at the widespread notion of the “free right to war” (liberum ius ad bellum) – and locates the birth of the modern ban on war under international law in the early 19th century.
The WSI awards the Jost Delbrück Prize every two years in memory of its former director of many years. The prize, endowed with €1,000, honors outstanding dissertations in the field of international law of peace and conflict that have been written at universities or research institutions in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
Hendrik Simon will present his book during the award ceremony. Afterwards, the 7th Walther Schücking Lecture by Prof. Dr. Ernst-Ulrich Petersmann on “Transforming UN and WTO Legal Systems through International Legal Policy Competition and ‘Lawfare’” will take place.
When: November 19, 2024, 8:00-20:00
Where: Audimax, lecture hall D, Christian-Albrechts-Platz 2, 24118 Kiel
