Global Power Shifts, Institutional Adaptation, and the Rise of Autocratic IGOs

Hendrik Simon at the Giessen Annual Workshop on International Organisations (GAWIO) 2025

International organisations (IOs) are undergoing profound transformations in response to shifting global power dynamics, geopolitical tensions, economic crises, technological advancements, and transnational challenges such as climate change and security threats. These pressures necessitate institutional and policy adaptations as IOs seek to maintain their relevance and legitimacy. Some IOs have responded through internal reforms, adjusting governance frameworks, decision-making processes, or membership structures. Others face increasing autocratic influence, contesting established norms and reshaping global governance.

The Giessen Annual Workshop on International Organisations (GAWIO) 2025 aims to examine how IOs navigate global power shifts and emerging challenges through institutional restructuring, policy realignment, and strategic adaptation. Hendrik Simon will contribute with a keynote speech on the topic “A Century of Anarchy? War, Normativity, and the Birth of the Modern International Order”.
