Research on international institutions and the prohibition of torture at the European University Institute

Max Lesch, Researcher at PRIF, will take up a Max Weber Fellow­ship at the European Univer­sity Insti­tute (EUI) in Florence from September 1, 2024. The renowned program in history and social sciences supports post­docs in an inter­national environ­ment in all aspects of their aca­demic career with a wide range of (multi-)disci­plinary activities.  

During his stay at the Depart­ment of Political and Social Sciences, Lesch will work on his book manu­script entitled “Norms and Deviance in World Politics: Inter­national Insti­tutions and the Pro­hibition of Torture” and continue his research projects on legal struggles over the right to self-defence against non-state actors and the politics and practice of inter­national fact-finding missions. 

At PRIF, Max Lesch has specialized in inter­national norm dynamics, the role of inter­national law in world politics and inter­national practice theories with a focus on contes­tation, norm enforce­ment and legal develop­ment in the areas of human rights and peace and security law.
