Between Promise and Imposition: Democracy in Macedonia

In HSFK-Report 8/2009 Thorsten Gromes scrutinizes the state of democratisation in Macedonia

Democratisation in multi-ethnical post-civil war-societies mostly is a delicate issue. On the contrary democratisation in Macedonia seems to be a success story. The armed conflict in 2001 was finished by the Ohrid-agreement promising a radical reform of the governmental institutions. The following years most of the decisions could be implemented.

In HSFK-Report 8/2009 Zwischen Zumutung und Versprechen: Die Demokratie in Makedonien (Between Promise and Imposition: Democracy in Macedonia) Thorsten Gromesshows conclusively that Macedonia can´t serve as a model to other post-civil war-societies and indicates the destabilisation potentialities and deficiencies of the young democracy.
