What lessons can be learned from the past and what experiences can be made fruitful by strengthening collective memory processes that then serve as strategic resources for conflict transformation?
On September 20 and 21, 2023, an international conference on “Memory as a Resource in Conflict Transformation: The role of media and journalists in peacebuilding” will be held in Bogotá, Colombia. From PRIF, Sabine Mannitz, Sophia Birchinger and Jonas Wolff participate or moderate a panel on storytelling and memory work.
The two-day event brings together international scholars and media practitioners with a view to assessing the role of (different sorts of) media and journalists in peacebuilding processes after violent conflict and crimes against humanity. The main objectives are to provide a venue to share relevant up-to-date knowledge and critical reflections on the role of media and journalistic practices play in finding constructive responses to legacies of mass violence, particularly in dealing with the past.
The conference is organized within the framework and with funding of the Regional Research Center Transformations of Political Violence (TraCe) and the Leibniz Research Network "Value of the Past" by the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) together with the German-Colombian Peace Institute CAPAZ and the Leibniz Center Modern Orient (ZMO).
