Democratisation in multi-ethnical post-civil war-societies mostly is a delicate issue. On the contrary democratisation in Macedonia seems to be a success story. The armed conflict in 2001 was finished by the Ohrid-agreement promising a radical reform of the governmental institutions. The following years most of the decisions could be implemented.
In PRIF-Report No. 91 Between Impositions and Promises: Democracy in MacedoniaThorsten Gromesshows conclusively that Macedonia can´t serve as a model to other post-civil war-societies and indicates the destabilisation potentialities and deficiencies of the young democracy.
This PRIF Report is the English version of HSFK-Report No. 8/2009 Zwischen Zumutung und Versprechen: Die Demokratie in Makedonien. Both are available as free PDF-files for Download.
