Defense Against Terrorism and Data Privacy

Workbook on freedom and security in the light of international terrorism released by Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung and Berthold Meyer

During recent years, international terrorism and its actual and alleged dangers have left deep marks on our every day life. New security laws and safety instructions are supposed to guarantee our safety at home and abroad - but how much personal  freedom do they leave us?

To inform and sharpen our awareness on this issue, Berthold Meyer has developed a workbook for pupils in cooperation with the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb). The workbook with the title “Terrorabwehr und Datenschutz” (Defense Against Terrorism and Data Privacy) is published in the series “Themenblätter im Unterricht” (Working Papers for School Lessons) and contains didactical material for teachers and a worksheet for pupils. The goals are to show the tension between freedom and security in democracies and to make aware of the impact that state measures against terrorism have on ones personal life. Examples are the laws on retention of personal data and wiretap activities. Pupils learn about pro and contra arguments to develop a more critical opinion on the issue.

The workbook can be downloaded or ordered free of charge from the bpb homepage.
